This was going to be the most controversial scene in Game of Thrones

Game of Thrones ended in 2019 but, even more than a year after its outcome, details of the fiction continue to come to light. Now it has been George R.R. Martin who has revealed what the scene was originally like in which Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) rapes his young wife, Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke).

Entertainment Weekly has exclusively published an excerpt from Fire Cannot Kill Dragon, a book about the ins and outs of the series written by James Hibberd. In one passage, Martin explains how the sequence, starring actress Tamzin Merchant, was originally conceived before being replaced by Emilia Clarke.

"In the Emilia Clarke version, it's rape. It's not rape in my book, and it's not rape in the scene like we shot with Tamzin Merchant. It was a seduction," the author explained. "Dany and Drogo don't speak the same language. Dany is a little scared but also a little excited, and Drogo is being more considerate. The only words he knows are 'yes' or 'no.' It was originally a pretty faithful version." pointed.

The writer also revealed other details, such as David Benioff and D.B. Weiss wanted to remove Rickon's character. "I told them I had big plans for him and they stuck with it," he said.

Although the production ended up being a success, the team did not have high hopes at first. "No one knew what they were doing or what the hell that was. It didn't feel like this was going to change anyone's life. But we had a lot of fun," Nikolaj Coster-Waldau acknowledged. "At first we thought it was going well, but that was because we didn't know any better," Benioff joked.
